Two people died and seven others were injured after a car collided with a bus on the Nagoya Expressway in central Japan on Monday, local authorities said.

In the accident that occurred around 10:15 a.m. near the Toyoyama-Minami interchange, the bus overturned and caught fire, killing two of its passengers, the Aichi prefectural police and the Nagoya fire department said.

The bus was on its way from Nagoya Airport to central Nagoya, according to its operator. It is likely to have hit the median strip in the expressway before overturning, the police said.

The seven people hurt all suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the police said.

Witnesses said they heard the sound of explosions after the collision. Footage on the national broadcaster NHK showed black smoke billowing from the burning bus on the elevated expressway.
