Tokyo, 08 February, /AJMEDIA/
Azerbaijani sumo wrestler Huseyn Aghayev participated in the 16th Hakuho Cup in Tokyo for the first time.
AJMEDIA reports that our athlete, who participated in the competition for athletes aged 7-15 in the tournament held on February 7-8, defeated his Japanese and Brazilian rivals in the first 3 matches and advanced to the 1/16 finals. Our athlete lost to another Japanese wrestler, one of the main favorites of the competition, in that round.
Our compatriot, Vice President of the Azerbaijan Japanese Martial Arts and Culture Association Ulvi Agamirov, is participating in the competition as a referee in that tournament. He has been the only foreign referee in the Hakuho tournament for the 3rd year.
It should be noted that interest in sumo has increased in Azerbaijan in recent years. According to the decision of the International Sumo Federation, the World Sumo Championship will be held in Azerbaijan for the first time in October 2026.
