October 17 is Fuzuli City Day. On October 17, 2020, the villages of Goçehmadli, Chiman, Juvarli, Pirahmadli, Musabayli, Isıklı, Dadali and the city of Fuzuli of Fuzuli region were liberated from occupation by our brave Army. In total, 62 settlements of the region were liberated as a result of the 44-day Second Karabakh – Patriotic War.
The battle for Fuzuli was one of the heaviest battles during the Patriotic War. Breaking through several defense lines located on the contact line of Fuzuli gave Azerbaijan strategic advantages. Every day of the victory march was a demonstration of our strength and power. Under the leadership of the victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, our Armed Forces made our people happy and proud with their victories every day.
The liberation of Fuzuli from the occupation is of great importance both from a military-strategic, historical, and moral-political point of view. The city of Fuzuli and a large part of the region were occupied by the Armenian armed forces on August 23, 1993. Before the occupation, Fuzuli region was rich in historical and religious monuments, especially tombs. During the 30-year occupation period, Fuzuli region, like our other territories, was completely destroyed. Not a single building remained in the district. Our cultural heritage was severely damaged, our historical, cultural and religious monuments and mosques were destroyed.
The head of our state, Ilham Aliyev, always mentions this point in his speeches that when Fuzuli was liberated, we could not find a safe building to raise our flag there. Except for one military unit. We raised our flag on a pole in his yard.
On October 17, 2020, Muzaffar Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev delivered this good news to the people: “The Glorious Azerbaijan Army is successfully continuing its rescue mission… Today, a number of residential areas of Fuzuli region were liberated from invaders – Gochahmadli village, Chiman village, Juvarli village, Pirahmadli village, Musabayli village, Isikli village, Dadali village and Fuzuli city. The city of Fuzuli was freed from the invaders, Fuzuli is ours, Karabakh is Azerbaijan!”
Today, as in all our territories freed from occupation, the projects implemented in Fuzuli establish new rules of world-wide urban planning principles. At the National Urban Planning Forum held in Aghdam and Zangilan, projects related to the restoration of all territories freed from occupation were presented.
These lands are currently reviving, and are gradually being repopulated. Currently, the return of our compatriots to the cities of Fuzuli, Lachin, Shusha, Khojaly, Jabrayil, and the villages of Agali, Talish, Sus and Zabukh continues. The head of our state, Ilham Aliyev, in his meeting with the residents who moved to Fuzuli last year and the representatives of the district community, also brought to attention these realities that all our cities will be like Fuzuli. Because we are implementing the first urban development project in Fuzuli.
Fuzuli International Airport, which was founded in January 2021 and is called the air gate of Karabakh, was built in just 9 months and was inaugurated in October with the participation of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In 2022, the air gate of Eastern Zangezur was opened to the world. Zangilan International Airport was opened with the participation of the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Turkey. The third airport is being built in Lachin, it is planned to be put into operation next year. The head of our state, Ilham Aliyev, issued this order from the day of the beginning of the restoration and construction works in our territories freed from occupation, that the living of the former internally displaced persons should be ensured at the highest level, and all works should be carried out at the level of modern requirements.
These factors play a big role in the selection of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur as an ideal place for international events. Everyone who comes to these lands does not hide their amazement at the restoration work done. The completion of such large-scale work in a short period of time gives a very strong reason to say that the implementation of the Great Return Program will soon be fully completed.
