Zarifa Aliyeva – a selfless person working for the health of the people and the development of science

Honored Scientist of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Full Member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences Zarifa Aziz gizi Aliyeva was born on April 28, 1923 in the village of Shahtakhty, Sharur region, and went down in history as a scientist who dedicated her life to the health of her people and the development of health science. We would probably not be mistaken if we said that not all people born into the world are destined to live a meaningful life. Among these people, there are those whose meaningful life path becomes a treasure serving both the welfare of their people and their health. Zarifa Aliyeva, who brought light to this world not only to the people she belongs to, but also to all humanity, and who wrote her name in history with her kindness, was one of such outstanding personalities.

Zarifa Aliyeva, who went down in the history of world health as a prominent ophthalmologist scientist, made unique and unprecedented discoveries in medical science in the middle of the 20th century. In the 40s of the last century, the infectious disease trachoma, which damages the eyes and causes serious consequences for people, was widespread in Azerbaijan. The fight against this disease was of great importance not only in the field of ophthalmology, but also for the health of Azerbaijan in general. Zarifa Aliyeva, in addition to closely participating in the organization of preventive measures for the treatment of trachoma, traveled to regions where this disease was widespread and gave lectures to ophthalmologists, personally informing them of the achievements she had achieved in her practice. The prominent scientist Zarifa Aliyeva began her work as a research worker at the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Eye Diseases in 1949 and continued her scientific research after entering postgraduate study in 1950. In 1960, Zarifa Aliyeva defended her dissertation and received the degree of Candidate of Sciences, and since her proposed treatment method was applied throughout the republic, our country was saved from trachoma. Thus, Zarifa Aliyeva made a great contribution to Azerbaijani science and the protection of the health of the Azerbaijani people. In 1960-1967, Zarifa Aliyeva worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Ophthalmology, and in 1963, the USSR Higher Attestation Commission awarded her the title of senior researcher in the specialty “Ophthalmology”. In 1967, Zarifa Aliyeva was invited to the Azerbaijan State Institute of Advanced Training of Doctors as an associate professor.

Zarifa Aliyeva died in Moscow on April 15, 1985, in the spring of her 62nd year. At that time, she left behind the great statesman Heydar Aliyev, who protected Azerbaijan from all kinds of disasters and made our country known all over the world, with his faithful wife and children. In 1994, the body of Zarifa Aliyeva was brought to Baku and buried in the Alley of Honor.

The National Leader of the Azerbaijani people, Heydar Aliyev, said about Zarifa Aliyeva that “Zarifa Aliyeva, who embodied the spiritual values ​​of the Azerbaijani lady, managed to become legendary during her lifetime as a woman, a wife, a mother, a doctor, a scientist, a public figure, and by integrating these titles she bore with such high feelings as mercy, compassion, and humanism, she rose to the peak of true humanity.”

The bright path opened by Zarifa Aliyeva, who introduced Azerbaijani ophthalmology to the world, is developing year by year, and her monumental works, scientific achievements, and pedagogical skills are still being studied and studied, and are becoming the subject of many research works. The tireless research and fundamental works of the innovative scientist, who has made her mark in the field of ophthalmology, will never lose their value. Zarifa Aliyeva will always live in our hearts and will never be forgotten by our people who appreciate her unparalleled services in the field of medicine.
