Indonesian President Joko Widodo will visit Japan on Wednesday to hold talks with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the Japanese government said.
During his stay, Widodo is also scheduled to meet with Emperor Naruhito, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said.
“We will closely work with President Joko to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation toward realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said Matsuno.
Widodo and Kishida last met in late April in Bogor near Jakarta and agreed the two nations will step up cooperation toward realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific, a vision promoted by Japan amid China’s increasing clout in the region.
The upcoming visit comes as Indonesia is poised to host a summit of the Group of 20 major economies in November.
Widodo has invited both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the gathering and is expected to seek understanding from Japan about the invitations amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, according to an Indonesian government source.
