Big manufacturers’ sentiment worsens to 8 from 9: Bank of Japan survey

TOKYO – Business confidence among major Japanese manufacturers worsened to 8 in September from 9 three months earlier, the Bank of Japan’s Tankan survey showed Monday.

The reading of the key index measuring confidence among companies such as those in the auto and electronics sectors compares with an average market forecast of 11 in a Kyodo News survey.

125 killed in crowd stampede during football match riot in Indonesia

JAKARTA – At least 125 people were killed and about 300 injured in a crowd stampede following the eruption of violence at a soccer match in Indonesia’s East Java Province, one of the world’s deadliest stadium riots, police said Sunday.

The National Police revised down the number of victims of Saturday’s incident from several figures explained by different institutions, saying that confusing figures were caused by hospitals’ double-counting.

No. of Japan firms levied pro forma tax down 33% from peak level

TOKYO – Japanese local authorities levied pro forma standard tax on around 20,000 companies in fiscal 2020, around a third less than the peak in fiscal 2006, government data showed Sunday.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, which compiled the data, believes that a significant number of firms may have reduced their capital to under 100 million yen ($691,000), a threshold for imposition of the tax, to evade it, officials said.

Japan, U.S., Australia to strengthen defense ties amid China threat

HONOLULU – Japan, the United States and Australia will deepen their coordination over security strategy, their defense ministers said Saturday, apparently reflecting wariness over China’s growing maritime assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.

During their talks in Hawaii, the ministers also “strongly condemned” China’s ballistic missile launches across the Taiwan Strait in August after U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.

Ex-lawmaker Takemura, key figure in building non-LDP coalition, dies

TOKYO – Masayoshi Takemura, a former senior Japanese lawmaker who played a key role in building a new but short-lived government after the Liberal Democratic Party lost power in 1993, has died of kidney failure, according to people close to him. He was 88.

Takemura served as chief Cabinet secretary for Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa, who launched the non-LDP coalition government in August 1993 that briefly ended the LDP’s dominance of power since 1955.

FEATURE: NPO, citizens call for Japan aid for poison gas victims in China

TOKYO – While the Imperial Japanese Army used portions of the poison gas weapons it manufactured mainly during the 1937-1945 Sino-Japanese War, the rest were abandoned or disposed of in China and Japan.

A number of unexploded shells filled with poison gas or such gas in other forms were found in more than 40 locations in China and over 30 areas in Japan — from Hokkaido to Kyushu, according to the Japanese government.

Baseball: Buffaloes win PL title on final day of regular season

SENDAI – The Orix Buffaloes won their second consecutive Pacific League championship on the final day of the league’s regular season Sunday.

The Buffaloes’ 5-2 win over the Rakuten Eagles, coupled with the SoftBank Hawks’ 5-3 loss to the Lotte Marines, left the Buffaloes and the Hawks at the same 76-65 win-loss record with two ties each, but the Buffaloes clinched the title by virtue of a 15-10 head-to-head record against the Hawks.
