Tokyo, 27 April, /AJMEDIA/

Three people died and 10 others were injured, two seriously, after a vehicle collision Saturday night caused by a driver traveling the wrong way down an eastern Japan expressway, police said.

Two people died in the collision and a third person was killed when a truck slammed into traffic that had backed up after the first incident.

The car going in the wrong direction on the Tohoku Expressway in Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture, had a minor collision with another vehicle before continuing for over 2 kilometers and colliding head-on with the second victim’s vehicle at around 10 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Police confirmed Sunday that the two drivers, both male, had died. The driver going the wrong way was 42 and the driver of the car he crashed into was 56. Two more vehicles were caught up in the accident, causing a traffic jam that led to a rear-end collision with a truck that killed the third victim, a 60-year-old woman.

The accidents led to temporary closures between the Nasu and Kuroisoitamuro exits on the expressway, which runs between Saitama and Aomori prefectures.
