Japan exit from Sakhalin LNG would let China swoop in: ex-minister

Japan needs to be pragmatic about its energy procurement and think twice about leaving a Russian natural gas project, a senior politician in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party said on Sunday.

Pressure is mounting for Japanese companies to review their energy business connections with Russia in the wake of Shell’s withdrawal from the Sakhalin 2 project, which accounts for close to 9% of Japan’s LNG imports, industry sources said March 1.
