Azerbaijan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) discussed broadening cooperation in the field of renewable energy, Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan Mikayil Jabbarov wrote on X, AJMEDIA reports.
“Within our trip to the Davos Economic Forum, we held a meeting with Jürgen Rigterink, the First Vice-President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Our discussions emphasized the importance of broadening cooperation between EBRD and Azerbaijan in the renewable energy sector, Azerbaijan’s active participation in international initiatives, and the prospects for hosting COP29 in the country. EBRD’s expressed support for Azerbaijan in this field was acknowledged,” the minister said.
Previously, Jabbarov held an online meeting with Rigterink.
The meeting focused on projects implemented in Azerbaijan with the Bank’s support, prospects of cooperation with Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company CJSC, possibilities of expansion of joint activities of the parties in the field of renewable energy sources, and improvement of the information technology ecosystem.
The EBRD First Vice President emphasized the significance of the fact that Azerbaijan has been chosen to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) this year and expressed the Bank’s willingness to support Azerbaijan in this regard.
The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was officially announced in Dubai on December 11, 2023.
Besides Azerbaijan, both Armenia and Bulgaria nominated their candidatures. However, after direct negotiations between the Office of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia on December 7, 2023, Armenia decided to withdraw its candidacy in favor of Azerbaijan. Bulgaria followed suit and also withdrew its candidacy.
On January 4, 2024, Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, was appointed as President of COP29.
