The national flag of Azerbaijan was raised in front of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto, Canada, to mark Azerbaijan’s Independence Day. According to the State Committee on Work with Diaspora, the ceremony was jointly organized by the “Vatan” Azerbaijani Art and Culture Center and the Azerbaijan House in Canada.
The event was attended by members of the Azerbaijani community, supporters of Azerbaijan, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario Donna Skelly, and Members of the Ontario Parliament. Turkish Consul General in Toronto Can Yoldaş, Director of Government Relations at the Consulate General of Israel in Toronto and Western Canada Elysse Danson, and Deputy Consul General of Ghana Joyce Asamoah-Koranteng also participated.
Lalin Hasanova, head of the “Vatan” Azerbaijani Art and Culture Center and the Azerbaijan House in Canada, thanked the guests for sharing in the Azerbaijani community’s celebration. She expressed confidence that Azerbaijanis living in Canada will contribute to advancing friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Speakers at the event highlighted the dynamic development of the modern Azerbaijani state, the political successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
Congratulatory letters from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party Bonnie Crombie, Speaker Donna Skelly, and Ontario MPs Mike Schreiner, Andrea Hazell, and Kristyn Wong-Tam were presented to the Azerbaijani community.
The Azerbaijani tricolor flag was raised as the national anthem was performed.
The ceremony concluded with dances and a drum performance by the “My Azerbaijan” weekend school, which operates under the Azerbaijan House.
