Two giant inflatable rubber ducks are making a splash in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor, marking the return of an art installation last seen in the city’s waters a decade ago.
The pair of yellow ducks, titled “Double Ducks” and themed on the classic bathtub toy, was created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman. He has taken his installation on a world tour since launching it in the Netherlands in 2007.
The 2013 edition in Hong Kong featured a single duck 16.5 meters in height. The current ducks measure a more impressive 18 meters each.
Project organizer AllRightsReserved in a press release said having a pair of ducks brings to mind the Chinese characters meaning “happiness” and “friend,” both featuring two identical components next to one another.
“Double duck is double luck” Hofman said in the release, adding the work emphasizes friendship and getting connected.
“Due to COVID we learned that spending time together is so valuable. Making moments and memories for real, living in the here and now, are things to cling on to,” said the 46-year-old Dutch artist.
His work has travelled to 12 locations across four continents, according to the project organizer, including South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.
The installation’s visit to Hong Kong last time attracted over 8 million people, they said.
The ducks will be stationed in the harbor for about two weeks from Saturday, subject to weather conditions, according to the organizer, with images of the pair displayed on public transport around Hong Kong.
