EU, WHO conduct capacity-building training on mental health in Azerbaijan’s Tartar district

As a part of Coordination and Transformation of Mental Health Services in the Post-Conflict Setting project funded by the European Union (EU), World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office organized the mhGAP (action plan to eliminate gaps in the mental health field) training for primary health care physicians at Tartar District Central Hospital in collaboration with Ministry of Health and TABIB.

According to the WHO country office, M. Sc. Narmin Osmanli (WHO Azerbaijan), Dr. Vafa Shirinova (Ministry of Health), and Dr. Vusala Aliyeva (TABIB), local trainers who completed the mhGAP trainer program, trained primary healthcare physicians to identify, manage, and refer the most common mental health disorders.

The training included sessions on mental health disorders such as clinical depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and stress, as well as basic principles of the right approach to people applying for help. Role-play and group work were organized to improve knowledge and increase practical skills.

The Coordination and Transformation of Mental Health Services in Post-conflict Settings is an EU-funded project implemented by WHO Azerbaijan to improve mental healthcare services at the primary care level. The project aims to help establish a multidisciplinary coordination mechanism for MHPSS and to build mental healthcare response capacity in PHC facilities. This project is part of the European Union’s and the WHO’s continued support to Azerbaijan.
