Japan, U.S. confirm need to boost deterrence capabilities

The foreign ministers of Japan and the United States on Saturday confirmed the need to enhance the deterrence and response capabilities of the bilateral alliance following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Japanese foreign minister said.

In their telephone talks, Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also agreed that the Russian attack “shakes the foundation of international order” and its impact “will not be limited to Europe,” according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
