KDDI data services restored to 70% of customers in parts of Japan

Tokyo, 3 July, /AJMEDIA/

KDDI Corp., one of Japan’s top three mobile carriers, said Sunday it was still working to fully restore its network, with around 70 percent of customers in eastern and western Japan able to access mobile data services.

The “au” mobile brand operator has been scrambling to resolve the disruption to its nationwide network since early Saturday, with some of its mobile customers still unable to make calls or access the internet. The company will hold a press conference at around 11 a.m. to explain the matter.

The disruption, which began at around 1:35 a.m. Saturday, has impacted services from banking and transmission of weather data to parcel deliveries, freight and network-connected cars.

KDDI has said a failure with its voice call system triggered a concentration of traffic that led it to control communications.

The problems have also affected its low-cost UQ Mobile brand and its lower-priced “povo” wireless customers as well as companies using KDDI’s network.

As of March, KDDI had around 62 million mobile subscriptions with individual contracts for the au, UQ Mobile and povo brands accounting for about 31 million users.

Japan’s largest mobile carrier by subscribers, NTT Docomo Inc., suffered a system failure in October and was issued with an administrative order to prevent a recurrence.

The disruption, lasting around 29 hours and affecting at least 12.9 million users, was labeled a serious incident by the communications ministry.
