M4.7 quake jolts Tokyo area, no tsunami warning issued

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 jolted Tokyo and nearby areas on Thursday night, but no tsunami warning was issued, Japan’s weather agency said.

The quake, which occurred around 8:52 p.m. with the focus at a depth of about 70 kilometers, measured 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in northwestern Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Late Thursday night, another quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 rattled western Japan, logging 4 on the domestic seismic intensity scale in Kyoto.

The weather agency said there was no fear of a tsunami from the quake, which occurred at around 11:34 p.m. with the focus about 20 km underground in Kyoto Prefecture.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious property damage from either of the two temblors.
