Today marks the 101st anniversary of the establishment of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The status of autonomy was formalized by the Moscow Treaty signed between Russia and Turkey in 1921, and later by the Kars Treaty signed between Turkey and the republics of the South Caucasus.
The Constitution adopted by popular vote on November 12, 1995 granted the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic the status of an autonomous state within Azerbaijan.
Administratively, the Autonomous Republic consists of 7 regions and the Nakhchivan city administrative territorial district. There are 219 settlements in Nakhchivan, including 5 cities (Nakhchivan, Ordubad, Julfa, Sharur and Shahbuz), 8 urban-type settlements, and 206 villages. The administrative center of the Autonomous Republic is the ancient city of Nakhchivan.
The National Leader Heydar Aliyev has made great contributions to the sustainable development of Nakhchivan. Since coming to power, the Great Leader has always kept Nakhchivan in mind and has been the initiator of the most important decisions regarding the future of the autonomous republic. It was thanks to Heydar Aliyev’s foresight that on November 17, 1990, the adoption of the tricolor flag of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic as a state symbol by the supreme legislative body of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic had a decisive impact on the complex socio-political processes of the period and brought Azerbaijan closer to independence.
