North Korea fires suspected ballistic missile toward Sea of Japan

Tokyo, 5 January, /AJMEDIA/

North Korea has launched what appeared to be a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, the Japanese and South Korean governments said Wednesday.

The unidentified projectile was believed to have already landed, according to the Japan Coast Guard.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch took place around 8:10 a.m. and its military was closely monitoring the situation in cooperation with the United States.

“We will provide the Japanese people with the right information swiftly by making best efforts in information gathering and analysis,” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters after the launch.

He added it is deplorable that North Korea has repeatedly launched missiles since last year.

U.N. Security Council resolutions ban North Korea from employing ballistic missile technology.

North Korea last launched a projectile in October 2021, when it test-fired a new type of submarine-launched ballistic missile, adding to concern over the nuclear-armed nation’s technological advances in hard-to-intercept weapons.
