UNSC holds meeting on N.Korean missile launches

Tokyo, 16 September, /AJMEDIA/

The UN Security Council has convened an emergency meeting to discuss the latest ballistic missiles fired by North Korea.

The meeting was held on Wednesday at the request of France and Estonia.

It was the first Security Council meeting on the North’s ballistic missile tests since March.

Ahead of the meeting, France’s UN Ambassador, Nicolas de Riviere, told reporters that his country condemns the launches as a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions and a threat to the security and peace of the international community.

At a news conference on Wednesday, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that diplomatic engagement remains the only pathway to sustainable peace and complete, verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. He stressed that North Korea should seek dialogue with parties working toward denuclearization.
