People across the US northeast are still cleaning up, more than a day after a storm first hit the region. At least 39 people were killed. More than 150,000 homes lost power.
The storm was what remained of Hurricane Ida. A record 18 centimeters of rain fell over 24 hours in New York’s Central Park.
All that rain sparked flash floods that poured into homes. Some people drowned in underground apartments.
The flooding trapped people in their cars. It overwhelmed subway stations. And it forced airport authorities to cancel hundreds of flights.
The storm spawned a tornado in New Jersey. The winds blew roofs off homes and leveled one neighborhood.
President Joe Biden acknowledged that extreme weather events are now the norm. He promised federal help in delivering food, water, and other supplies.
