Graduation ceremony in Icherisheher honors Mak’TAB alumni

On April 8, the Administration of State Historical-Architectural Reserve “Icherisheher”, a public authority in charge of the management of the world heritage site “Icherisheher”, organised a graduation ceremony for the Mak’TAB (School of Restoration of Historical Monuments) graduates, during which they were presented with diplomas.

The event was attended by the members of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan (Parliament), senior officials from the State Service for Cultural Heritage Conservation, Development, and Rehabilitation under the Ministry of Culture, Reserves Management Center of the State Tourism Agency, Baku City Executive Authority, the Institute of Archaeology, Ethnography, and Anthropology of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), as well as partner organisations of the Mak’TAB project, delegates from the various state and private institutions, international organizations, university rectors, and distinguished cultural and public figures.

During the event, speeches were delivered by Shahin Seyidzade, Chairman of the Board of the State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration of Icherisheher; Hafiz Pashayev, Rector of ADA University; Fazil Mustafa, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Culture Committee of the Milli Majlis; Erich Pummer, member of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites); Sabina Hajiyeva, Head of the State Service for Cultural Heritage Conservation, Development, and Rehabilitation under the Ministry of Culture; and Elbay Gasimzade, Chairman of the Union of Architects. They emphasized the significance of the project and extended their best wishes to the Mak’TAB graduates for their future endeavors in cultural heritage preservation. Additionally, a video showcasing the project’s achievements was presented to the guests.

In addition, the event was also addressed by Kubanychbek Omuraliev, Secretary General of the Organization of the Turkic States, and Riin Alatalu, Vice President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) at UNESCO, as a video message.

The Mak’TAB project, launched in 2022, endeavors to foster collaboration among professionals engaged in the restoration of historical and architectural monuments, spanning both public and private sectors. Its mission is to introduce them to global best practices, transfer contemporary restoration methodologies, and nurture their ongoing professional growth. In total, 28 representatives from diverse institutions took part in theoretical and practical workshops led by George Gilbert, a distinguished Austrian scientist with a PhD, who is also a member of ICOMOS and serves as the head of the “Atelier Erich Pummer GmbH” company.

The Mak’TAB project is a collaborative effort involving the State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration of Icherisheher, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the State Urban Planning and Architecture Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction, and the Austrian company “Atelier Erich Pummer.”
