The rapidly changing geopolitical conditions in the world show that international organizations now have greater responsibilities in strengthening peace and stability, supporting economic development, protecting socio-political balance, and ensuring security. From this point of view, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is important as an institution that has grown in prestige in the international arena in recent years and has begun to play a more important role in the fields of both security and economic development.
Among the main goals of the organization are the strengthening of mutual trust and neighbourly relations between the member states, the development of effective cooperation in politics, trade and economy, science and technology, culture, including education, energy, transport, tourism, environmental protection and other fields, peace in the region, includes making joint efforts to achieve security and stability, and taking steps to create a new political and economic international order.
The invitation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev to the Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on September 15-16 of the current year is a clear confirmation of the reputation of our republic, especially the head of state on a world scale, and the high respect shown to the head of the country.
During his speech at the summit, the head of state once again stated that the settlement of the Karabakh conflict at the end of 2020 created new opportunities for the development of transport and communication projects in our region. Today, Azerbaijan is building thousands of kilometers of highways and hundreds of kilometers of railways in the territories liberated from occupation after the Victory. After the Zangezur Corridor is opened, it will further increase the transport capabilities of the countries of the region and will be beneficial for all countries located along the route. Of course, the Zangezur Corridor is a factor of economic importance not only for Azerbaijan, but also for all regional states, including countries that are members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
In his meetings with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif and President of Russia Vladimir Putin, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev expressed his interest in deepening relations with these countries in various directions and continuing joint efforts for their further development, also drew attention to our country’s firm position regarding the provocation in the Armenia-Azerbaijani border zone and its commitment to peace policy. It was noted that this provocation by Armenia is a big blow to the normalization process between the two countries. Therefore, all responsibility falls on the military and political leadership of Armenia.
During his speech, the head of state also mentioned that the inefficient activity of some leading international organizations is a cause for concern. In this regard, it is worth noting the 4 resolutions of the UN Security Council in 1993 demanding the withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Double standards are still allowed in international relations. Thus, some resolutions of the UN Security Council are implemented within a few days. Known resolutions regarding Azerbaijan have not been implemented for 27 years.
Despite all this, Azerbaijan has proved itself to be a country that successfully leads prestigious international institutions around the world and an important platform where global issues are discussed. In 2011, Azerbaijan was elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council with the support of 155 countries of the world, and is currently the chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement, which is the largest organization in the world after the UN. The extension of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of this organization for another year is an indication of the great respect and influence of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev in the world, in addition to the successful chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement of our country.
