Actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, a major star of France’s New Wave cinema, has died. He was 88 years old.
Belmondo was born in a suburb of Paris in 1933, the son of a renowned sculptor.
He discovered acting in his teens, and performed on stage and in films while attending the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art.
He shot to stardom with his performance in Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless,” which was released in 1960.
Belmondo went on to star in dozens of films, including action movies and comedies such as “That Man from Rio.”
His lawyer said he had been very tired for some time and died peacefully at home on Monday.
French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement that Belmondo was a national treasure, full of panache and laughter.
