Japanese men identified as pair who drowned near popular U.S. falls

Two men who died in a suspected drowning over the weekend near Washington state’s popular Eagle Falls have been identified by authorities as Japanese nationals.

Takayuki Suzuki, 34, and Hiroya Konosu, 21, were identified Tuesday by the local medical examiner’s office, according to media reports. Both men were studying abroad.

Social media exposure has made the waterfall in the northwestern United States more popular in recent years, but the increase in visitor numbers has coincided with a spike in accidents at the site.
The two men were among a group of four visiting the falls when an emergency call on Saturday reported that two people had entered the water but had not re-emerged, the media said. Rescue teams were immediately mobilized, and their bodies were discovered on Sunday.

One of the men reportedly lost his footing and fell into the river. It is likely the second man entered the water attempting to rescue him.
